President's Corner

There’s a phenomenon occurring in IT that is being touted as new, yet I realize
it’s something Digital Movers has been doing for decades. It’s called Software
as a Service (SaaS). Simply put, it’s the concept of renting IT hardware and
software applications versus buying them. We’ve done it with EDI services (our
flagship Host*EDI service is one example). More recently, “owners” of software
products (software developers such as Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, etc) who have
typically sold “shrink- wrapped” software, now have offerings that let you
“rent” application software (and the hardware that it runs on) instead of
buying it. And they “host” the application(s) on their hardware, in their data
centers, so you don’t have to. They worry about upgrades, data backup, hardware
outages, etc. For the end-user, there’s usually no upfront capital investment
and most vendors charge for the services used on a monthly, per seat (number of
users) basis. When you analyze it, there’s some great advantages to this
approach.
Let’s take a typical ERP system. A business needs to do due diligence to
acquire the right application, buy the hardware to run it on, migrate from what
they may already have, get a technical staff to operate it, support the
application with patches & upgrades, train and support the users, provide
for backup of data, provide for a redundant processing platform (in case of
power outages, hardware failure, terrorist attacks, etc). When you add up all
these costs, letting a company provide all of this as a “service” (basically in
a hosted environment), makes both economic and practical sense. You get a
better product, faster in implementation and cheaper to use. Digital Movers
will begin offering several “hosted” applications in the near future, tied (of
course) to our E-Commerce/EDI offerings. Renting (alias “Outsourcing”) may well
be the new IT Paradigm.
In this issue we’re previewing our new Alliance Partner. Easylink Global
Services (previously AT&T Easylink) has partnered with Digital Movers and
made us their Authorized Reseller for Value Added Network (VAN) Services.
EasyLink's IP EDI Service is a reliable, scalable, feature-rich, and flexible
platform that allows our customers to leverage their existing IP infrastructure
and connect to any electronic trading partner regardless of how they transmit
and receive their EDI traffic. Digital Movers purchases large blocks traffic
and passes discounts along to our customers. For Tier 1 VAN services, with
seamless Gateways to all other Vans, give our sales department a call. You’ll
be extremely pleased with the pricing.
Recently, we had another addition to our staff. Al Weis joins us as Senior
Sales Associate. Al has been in the Value Added Network business for the past
25 years, selling for GXS and ICCNET. He’s a seasoned veteran in the
transportation area and we’re fortunate to have him join the team. When you
talk to him, please join us in welcoming him aboard.
In July we also had an additional reason to celebrate; we just processed twelve
and a half million transactions!! We want to extend a very large ‘Thank you’ to
our loyal customers, many of whom have been with us for many years. We’ll
continue to work hard to earn your business every day and provide you with the
best in E-Commerce services and support.
As always, please fee free to email me your comments or thoughts at

Inside Insight
|
|
If you want to view the retailers that we have set up for you as a customer,
after logging into Insight, click on “Trading Partnerships”. The list provides
all the document setups for the trading partners that you are doing EDI with
through Digital Movers. This list can be copied and pasted to an Excel
spreadsheet for easier viewing and adjusting to your specifications.
After logging into Insight, on the right side on the screen is a list of sites
that can be helpful and useful, including the pressroom websites for major
retailers. Also, there are links that are helpful in researching the Bar Code
Label, GTIN, VICS Bill of Lading as well as a list of SCAC codes which is used
by carriers. Most recently added is the United Nations Location Codes website.

Looking Ahead

Digital Movers has added another EDI document type to their arsenal, it is the
Lockbox transaction set (an EDI 823.)
Do your customers mail payments to you? Are your customers dispersed across a
region or the country? Do you hold checks over a day or two because your staff
doesn't have the time to process them? If so, you may want to consider the
benefits of an automated lockbox processing service. The lockbox transaction is
created by your lockbox bank and contains your lockbox deposit records. You now
have the option of receiving this data electronically.
Using lockbox banking is a cash flow improvement technique in which you have
your customers' payments delivered to a special post office box instead of your
business address. Automating the lockbox transaction eliminates manual in-house
processing. It is expensive to process payments manually. Opening the mail,
keying the remitted items and going to the bank takes time and can be risky.
And there are the inevitable keying mistakes that take time and resources to
find and correct.
What can Lockbox Banking do for you?
*Faster access to your funds.
*More timely receivables information.
*Customized Remittance Processing.
*Greater Remittance Processing.
*More Efficient use of your office Staff.
As with any transaction that you trade, the Lockbox transaction can be viewed
by using Insight and/or be sent to you in your flat files.
If you would like to learn more or inquire on the Lockbox transaction set,
please contact EC Support.
